Etymotic Research Inc.
Etymotic Research has spent over twenty-five years refining
in-ear technology for precision monitoring and critical listening.
The first in-ear earphones were invented by Etymotic in 1984 for
clinical audiometry and auditory research, and later converted to
the first high-fidelity,noise-isolating earphones,the ER-4s
in 1991.
Etymotic’s engineering team is led by founder Dr.Mead Killion,
audiologist,engineer,inventor and jazz musici
an.Etymotic’s audio
engineers, musicians and audiologists working together have
generated over 100 patents issued and pending.
Etymotic’s mission is to design products that measure, improve
and protect hearing.Etymotics products are used by musicians
and others who insist on superior sound quality.Etymotic means
“true to the ear.”
Specifications
EARPHONE
Transducer type: balanced armature
Impedance: 32 Ohms @ 1 kHz
Maximum continuous input: 1V
Sound pressure level 1 kHz: 97 ±3 dB @ 0.1V
Frequency response: 22 Hz to 12 kHz
MICROPHONE
Microphone type: directional electret
Operating voltage: 1.0 V to 10.0 V
Close talking sensitivity: -46 ±3 dB dB re: 1 V/Pa @ 1 kHz
(measured @ 15 mm from source)
Noise Rejection: 10 dB
(compared to an omnidirectional microphone at the same location)
Noise Isolation
The earphone provides the highest noise isolation of any mobile
phone headset. Noise reduction is 37 dB, averaged over the
octave frequencies from 125 to 8000 Hz, allowing only the audio
from the caller to enter the ear. As an earplug,it has a calculated
noise reduction rating (NRR) of 24 dB. The microphone provides
4 to 11 dB greater noise rejection than other microphones at the
same location, and up to 25 dB more noise rejection than booms
that are not close to the mouth.

Proper Care
Do not expose the headset to extreme temperatures.
Avoid dropping or strong impact.
Always leave an eartip on the headset for shock protection.
Do not pull on the cord to remove it from the jack or the ear.
Clean or replace the eartip prior to use by others.
Replace eartips regularly.
Earwax buildup can reduce the headset output. When the filter
becomes clogged it should be replaced. See “Changing the filter.”
Over time eartips may lose their elasticity. Fo
r best performance
and retention,replace 3-flange eartips every 3-6 months.
Replace foam and glider eartips regularly.
To clean 3-flange eartips:
1. Remove eartip from the earphone.
2. Clean with water and mild soap.
3. Dry the eartip before placing it back on the earphone.
Eartip Care
Caution
In rare instances an eartip may come off in the ear canal when
removing the earphone. If this should occur and the eartip cannot
be easily removed, it is recommended that you promptly contact
an audiologist or other medical professional.A professional can
use blunt tweezers to remove the eartip.
Consult an audiologist or physician if you have excessive ear wax,
difficulty inserting the eartips, or discomfort after prolonged use.
